In five short clauses, the apostle summarizes the entire transaction of salvation and its immediate, permanent result. The word 'justified' in the Greek is dikaiōthentes — a legal term drawn from the courtroom, not the counseling room. It means to be declared righteous by a judge. This is not the same as being made righteous in practice over time; justification is an instantaneous legal verdict pronounced over the believing sinner the moment he places his faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
