Romans 5:1 – Justified by Faith, We Have Peace with God | KJV Bible Study

Week 4 · Day 22-1 · 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

— Romans 5:1 KJV

The declaration of Romans 5:1 stands as one of the most legally precise and spiritually transformative statements in all of Paul's writings. In five short clauses, the apostle summarizes the entire transaction of salvation and its immediate, permanent result.

The word 'justified' in the Greek is dikaiōthentes — a legal term drawn from the courtroom, not the counseling room. It means to be declared righteous by a judge. This is not the same as being made righteous in practice over time; justification is an instantaneous legal verdict pronounced over the believing sinner the moment he places his faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. God, acting as the perfectly just Judge, looks at the account of the one who has believed and declares: not guilty. The penalty has been paid. The record is cleared. The righteousness of Christ is imputed — credited — to the believer's account.

What follows justification is equally remarkable: we have peace WITH God. Notice that Paul does not say we have a feeling of peace, or that we should try to achieve peace, or that peace is available to those who maintain certain spiritual disciplines. He says we HAVE it — present tense, settled reality, legal consequence of the verdict. Before justification, every human being stands in a state of enmity with God (Romans 5:10 — 'when we were enemies'). The wrath of God abides upon the unbeliever (John 3:36). But the justified believer has crossed from the realm of divine wrath into the realm of divine favor.

✂ Right Division

Under the Mosaic Law, Israel could never possess permanent peace with God. The sacrificial system required constant repetition — the same offerings year after year — because the blood of bulls and goats could not permanently take away sins (Hebrews 10:4). The high priest could never sit down in the holy of holies because his work was never finished. But Christ, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God (Hebrews 10:12) — His work complete. Romans 5:1 belongs to the grace age, the age of the completed sacrifice, the age in which justification by faith alone is the declared pathway to peace. This verse cannot be properly applied apart from understanding the dispensational context in which Paul wrote it.

The phrase 'through our Lord Jesus Christ' is the channel through which this peace flows. It is not earned through religious performance, not maintained through sacramental observance, and not secured by human merit. It is entirely through Christ — His obedience, His death, His resurrection, His intercession. The believer's peace with God is as secure as Christ Himself, which means it is absolutely, eternally secure.

✦ Application for Today

Practical application begins with a deliberate choice of knowledge over feeling. Feelings fluctuate; justification does not. When guilt returns — as it does for every believer — the answer is not increased spiritual effort or emotional self-condemnation. The answer is to stand on the declaration of Romans 5:1: I am justified by faith. I have peace with God through Jesus Christ my Lord. This is not positive thinking or self-affirmation; it is alignment with legal reality as declared by God Himself.

Every morning is an opportunity to begin from the position of peace rather than striving toward it. The workman who understands Romans 5:1 is freed from the exhausting cycle of trying to earn what has already been freely given. Study to shew thyself approved — and let the peace of God guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Amen.
