1 Corinthians 2:9-10 – The Spirit Reveals the Deep Things of God | KJV

Week 4 · Day 23-1 · 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

“But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”

— 1 Corinthians 2:10 KJV

First Corinthians 2 contains one of the most extraordinary claims in all of Paul's writings: that the things which eye has not seen, ear has not heard, and heart has not imagined — things that no natural faculty can access — God has revealed to the believing soul through His indwelling Spirit.

The passage opens with verse 9's famous statement, often quoted as a description of heaven: 'Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.' But the very next word — 'But' — introduces the decisive turn. These things are inaccessible to natural faculties; BUT God has revealed them by His Spirit. The point is not merely that heaven is wonderful; the point is that the Spirit-indwelt believer has present access to divine revelation that surpasses natural human capacity.

Verse 10 describes the Spirit's omniscient searching: 'the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.' The word 'deep' is bathē in Greek — the depths, the profundities, the things that lie beneath the surface of casual reading. The Spirit who knows the mind of God (verse 11) is the same Spirit who indwells every grace-age believer at the moment of salvation. This means every believer, regardless of educational background or social standing, has access through the indwelling Spirit to the deep things of God revealed in Scripture.

✂ Right Division

Verse 12 makes the application explicit: 'we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.' The things freely given to the grace-age believer — forgiveness, righteousness, sonship, the indwelling Spirit, every spiritual blessing in heavenly places — are revealed and made real by that same Spirit. Under the Law, Israel had priests and prophets to mediate between the people and God. In the grace age, every believer is a priest (1 Peter 2:9 in its Kingdom context) with the Spirit Himself as teacher (John 16:13).

Verse 14 warns that 'the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him.' This explains why the grace Gospel sounds like foolishness to the wisdom of the world (1:18). The channel through which divine truth flows — the indwelling Spirit — is absent in the unregenerate person. But the spiritual person judges all things (verse 15), because the mind of Christ is communicated through the indwelling Spirit to the believing soul.

✦ Application for Today

Before reading Scripture each day, the simple prayer is transformative: 'Holy Spirit, You search the deep things of God. Reveal to me what I need today.' This is not mysticism; it is alignment with the promise of 1 Corinthians 2:10. The Spirit who inspired the Word illuminates the Word. Read Paul's prison epistles especially — Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians — with the expectation that the Spirit will make the deep things plain.

No seminary degree is required to access the deep things of God. The Spirit who searches the depths of God lives in you. Open the Word with expectation and let Him teach you. Study to shew thyself approved — with the best Teacher available making Himself available every time you open the page. Amen.
