1 Timothy 2:5 – One God and One Mediator Between God and Men | KJV
“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5-6 KJVFirst Timothy 2:5 is the most decisive anti-hierarchical statement in all of Scripture — decisively because it is not primarily a statement about church organization but about the completed work of the God-Man who cleared the path between every human soul and the Father.
The word 'mediator' (mesitēs in Greek) refers to a go-between, an intermediary who stands between two parties and facilitates their relationship. In the Old Testament economy, the Levitical priesthood served this mediatorial function — the priests offered sacrifices on behalf of the people and interceded before God on their behalf. The people could not approach God directly; the system of priests, sacrifices, and the veil of the temple maintained the distance while providing regulated access.
All of this changed at the cross. Matthew 27:51 records that at the moment of Christ's death, 'the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.' The tearing was from top to bottom — God's initiative, not human hands. The veil that had separated the holy of holies from the rest of the temple — the veil that represented the barrier between sinful humanity and the holy presence of God — was permanently removed by Christ's one sacrifice. The way into the presence of God was opened to every believer directly, permanently, without requiring a human intermediary.
The New Testament is explicit about what this means for the grace-age believer: 'Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus' (Hebrews 10:19). BOLDNESS — not timidity, not through an appointed priest, not after extensive preparation. Bold, direct, immediate access to the Father through the blood of Christ and in the name of Christ. First Timothy 2:5 states the mediatorial reality; Hebrews 10:19-22 states the practical implication: draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.
'Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time' — the ransom is the payment that secured the access. Christ did not merely open a theoretical door; He paid the actual price of admission for every person who comes to the Father through Him. 'Testified in due time' acknowledges that Paul is writing in the age when this reality is being proclaimed — the grace age, when the mystery of universal access to the Father through the one Mediator is the message given to Paul for the Gentiles.
When you pray, come with the full confidence of 1 Timothy 2:5 and Hebrews 4:16: bold, direct, immediate access to the Father through the one Mediator. No saint needs to be invoked. No priest needs to intercede. No elaborate preparation is required. The door is open. The blood has been applied. Come boldly. He is your Father. Christ is your Mediator. The way is clear.
One God. One Mediator. One ransom paid. One door opened. Come boldly to the throne of grace that you may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. The greatest privilege in the universe — direct access to God through Christ — is yours. Use it lavishly. Amen.
