2 Corinthians 5:7 – We Walk by Faith, Not by Sight | KJV Bible Study

Week 4 · Day 23-3 · 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV

Five words, two contrasts, and a complete philosophy of the grace-age Christian life. Second Corinthians 5:7 is among the most compact and comprehensive statements in all of Paul's writings, and its implications touch every dimension of daily living.

The word 'walk' in Paul's usage describes the pattern of daily life — the ongoing conduct, the habitual orientation, the direction of the whole person through time. We do not merely believe by faith or hope by faith; we walk by faith — meaning faith is the atmosphere and method of the entire Christian life, not just selected spiritual moments. This walking is contrasted with walking by sight — that is, by direct sensory perception, by what can be seen, measured, and empirically verified.

In the Old Testament Kingdom program, Israel frequently walked by sight: the pillar of cloud by day and fire by night, the manna on the ground every morning, the water from the rock, the miracles of the prophets. These visible signs authenticated the presence of God and pointed the nation toward obedience. But the grace age is the faith age — the period between the two comings of Christ during which the believing soul lives by the Word of God and the testimony of the indwelling Spirit, without the confirming signs that characterized Israel's experience.

✂ Right Division

This dispensational distinction is not a deficiency but an elevation. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as 'the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.' Faith is not the absence of evidence; it is the presence of a different kind of evidence — the confirmed Word of God and the witness of the Spirit with our spirit (Romans 8:16). Abraham, the father of the faithful, was not given visible signs at every step; he was given a word, and he walked by that word through decades of waiting. The grace-age believer inherits this Abrahamic faith — 'he staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief' (Romans 4:20).

Second Corinthians 5:6-8 is set in a context of Paul's reflection on the mortal body and the hope of resurrection. He says that while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord — present experience — and while absent from the body, we are present with the Lord — the hope of death and resurrection. In between these two states, we walk by faith. The unseen realities — our position in Christ, our heavenly citizenship, the resurrection body awaiting us — are more real and more durable than anything we can see. Faith orients us toward the more real.

✦ Application for Today

Identify one circumstance currently demanding that you trust what you cannot see. Name it specifically. Then make the deliberate choice — not a feeling but a decision — to walk by faith in that circumstance. Take one concrete step that only makes sense if God is who He says He is and has promised what He has promised. Faith is not passive; it walks.

The grace-age believer is not disadvantaged by the absence of visible signs; he is invited into the deeper experience of walking with an invisible God whose Word is more certain than sight. Walk by faith today — step by step, moment by moment, through every unseen corridor of your life. Amen.
