Ephesians 1:7 – Redemption Through His Blood, Forgiveness of Sins | KJV

Week 4 · Day 24-4 · 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”

— Ephesians 1:7 KJV

Ephesians 1:7 opens with two words that establish the entire framework of grace-age salvation: 'In whom.' Everything the verse declares — redemption, forgiveness, riches of grace — is located not in human effort or religious achievement but in the person of Jesus Christ. Position determines possession.

The word 'redemption' (apolutrōsis in Greek) is the language of the ancient marketplace of slavery. A person could be redeemed — purchased out of slavery — by a buyer who paid the required price for freedom. The imagery Paul employs is deliberately economic: humanity was enslaved to sin, under the bondage of the Law's condemnation, held captive by death. Christ paid the price of redemption — not with silver or gold, which are themselves perishable, but with His own blood (1 Peter 1:18-19). The blood of Christ is the most valuable currency in the universe.

'We HAVE redemption' — present tense, settled possession. Not 'we are working toward redemption' or 'we will have redemption if we persevere.' We have it. The transaction is complete. The Levitical system of sacrifices required constant repetition because no single sacrifice could permanently accomplish what Christ accomplished in one act: 'by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified' (Hebrews 10:14). The grace-age believer possesses redemption as a present, permanent reality.

✂ Right Division

The measure of forgiveness is the detail that distinguishes this verse from every human system of spiritual accounting: 'according to the riches of his grace.' Not according to the minimum required. Not according to a proportional response to our repentance. According to the RICHES of His grace — the same riches described in Ephesians 3:8 as 'unsearchable,' beyond calculation, beyond the capacity of human accounting systems to measure. God does not forgive reluctantly or minimally; He forgives lavishly, extravagantly, in proportion to His own infinite grace.

The forgiveness secured by the blood of Christ is comprehensive in scope: 'the forgiveness of sins' — not some sins, not the less serious ones, not the ones committed before a certain point. All sins — past, present, and future — are covered by the redemption purchased at Calvary. Colossians 2:13-14 elaborates: God 'having forgiven you all trespasses; Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.' The certificate of debt was nailed to the cross and cancelled.

✦ Application for Today

When the enemy brings up your past — specific failures, specific sins, specific moments of shame — the answer is Ephesians 1:7: I have redemption through His blood. The forgiveness of ALL my sins. According to the RICHES — not the poverty — of His grace. Declare this not as wishful thinking but as legal reality established by the blood of Christ.

You are fully redeemed. Completely forgiven. The price has been paid in the most costly currency ever offered. You are not partly forgiven pending future performance; you are wholly forgiven according to the riches of infinite grace. Live from that lavish, permanent, blood-purchased freedom today. Amen.
