Ephesians 5:25-27 – Christ Loved the Church and Gave Himself for It | KJV
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.”
— Ephesians 5:25-26 KJVEphesians 5:25-27 contains the most profound marriage illustration in all of Scripture — but its primary subject is not marriage. Its primary subject is Christ's love for the Church, and marriage is the illustration, not the point.
Paul's instruction to husbands — 'love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church' — sets an impossible standard by human measurement and then explains what that standard looks like in practice. Christ loved the Church before it was lovable. He gave Himself for it before it was beautiful. He did not wait for the Church to demonstrate its worthiness before committing Himself; He gave Himself in sacrifice when the Church was not yet in existence, purchasing its members at the cost of His own blood.
The purpose of His self-giving is described in verses 26-27: 'That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.' The washing of water by the Word refers to the ongoing sanctifying work of the Scriptures in the life of the believer. Every time the Word of God is read, believed, and applied, it washes — purifies, clarifies, and beautifies — the believing soul. The Bridegroom is actively preparing His Bride through the ministry of the Word.
This passage reveals the present activity of Christ toward His Body in the grace age. He is not passively waiting; He is actively working — sanctifying, cleansing, washing — through the Word. The grace-age believer's engagement with Scripture is not merely personal devotion; it is participation in Christ's own program of preparing His Bride for the presentation. When you open Ephesians and read Paul's revelation of the mystery, Christ is washing you with the water of the Word, making you more beautiful for the day when He will present you to Himself.
The final presentation — 'to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing' — is the Bridegroom's ultimate goal. The Church He presents to Himself will be glorified, perfect, without blemish. Not because of her own achievement but because of His ongoing sanctifying work. The Bride will be beautiful because the Bridegroom has made her beautiful. This is grace from beginning to end: saved by grace, sanctified by grace, presented in glory by grace.
Meditate on Christ's love for you as His Church: He gave Himself for you. He is currently sanctifying you through His Word. He will present you spotless and glorious. Let this love — lavish, sacrificial, and purposeful — transform how you love others. The standard 'as Christ loved the church' is impossible by human effort and possible only by drawing on Christ's own love flowing through you.
You are loved by the Bridegroom who paid the ultimate price for you, who is actively preparing you through His Word, and who will one day present you to Himself in glory. That is your story — written in His blood, sustained by His Word, completed in His grace. Amen.
