Galatians 5:1 – Stand Fast in the Liberty of Christ | KJV Bible Study
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
— Galatians 5:1 KJVGalatians 5:1 is a battle cry from the apostle Paul, addressed to a church under spiritual attack. The Galatians were being pressured to add circumcision and Law-keeping to faith in Christ, and Paul's response is among the most fierce and sustained arguments in all of his epistles.
The letter to the Galatians was written to address a specific crisis: Judaizers — Jewish teachers who accepted Christ but insisted that Gentile believers must also be circumcised and keep the Law of Moses for full salvation. Paul's response in chapters 1 through 4 is comprehensive and decisive: the gospel of grace was received by direct revelation from Christ (1:11-12), is confirmed by the experience of the Spirit (3:2), and is established in the covenant with Abraham that preceded and supersedes the Law (3:15-18). The Law was a temporary guardian, a schoolmaster, added until the Seed should come (3:24).
Galatians 5:2 states the consequence of adding circumcision to faith with stark clarity: 'if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.' This is not an overstatement for rhetorical effect; it is a precise theological statement. The moment you add ANY human work to faith as a requirement for justification, you have stepped off the ground of grace entirely. You cannot be partly justified by faith and partly by works; grace and works are mutually exclusive as the basis of justification (Romans 11:6).
The 'yoke of bondage' in verse 1 refers specifically to the Mosaic Law as a system of justification. This is a grace-age warning with ongoing relevance: the yoke of bondage always seeks re-entry. It comes in many forms — religious performance requirements, guilt-based service, sacramental systems that add human works to the finished work of Christ, spiritual hierarchies that place human authority between the believer and God. Right division keeps the grace-age believer alert to these entanglements and equipped to resist them with Paul's own argument.
'Stand fast' is a military term — the language of a soldier who holds his position under attack. Paul does not say 'stand fast in your own strength' but in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free. The liberty is Christ's gift; the standing fast is the believer's responsibility. This combination of divine gift and human vigilance characterizes the grace-age life: we did not earn the liberty, but we are called to guard it actively.
Examine your current spiritual life for entanglements. Where are you trying to earn by performance what has already been freely given by grace? Where is guilt driving your service rather than love? Where have you added a human requirement to the simple truth of faith alone in Christ alone? Stand fast in liberty. Serve from love, not debt. The favor of God in Christ is already fully and freely yours.
Christ has made you free — free from the condemnation of the Law, free from the bondage of religious performance, free to serve God from a heart overflowing with gratitude for grace already received. Stand fast in that liberty. Let no one entangle you again. Amen.
