Post 109 · The New Man – Identity Transformation (Col 3:9-10)

"Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him." — Colossians 3:9-10 (KJV)
Who? Grace-Age believers in Colossae — Paul grounds ethical commands in completed identity: you HAVE PUT OFF the old man, you HAVE PUT ON the new.
Dispensation: Grace Age — identity precedes ethics; the new man is not a goal to achieve but a reality to act from.
Key: Past tense: 'have put off,' 'have put on' — not exhortations to achieve a new identity but commands to live from an already-given one.

Colossians 3:9-10 resolves the Grace-Age tension between indicative (what is true) and imperative (how to live). 'Lie not' is the command — but the basis is: 'seeing that ye HAVE PUT OFF the old man and HAVE PUT ON the new man.' Both verbs are aorist (past, completed action) — they describe what happened at the moment of salvation, not ongoing achievement. The new man is being 'renewed in knowledge' (progressive) but was put on once for all (aorist). This is the Grace-Age pattern: the new identity is given, the renewal proceeds, and the commands flow from the given identity, not toward it. We don't lie because we already are new people — new people don't live the old man's lifestyle.

Application: Read Colossians 3:5-17 as the full 'put off / put on' passage. The list to put off (v.5-9): sexual immorality, covetousness, anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication, lying. The list to put on (v.12-14): compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance, forgiveness, love. Notice: the put-off list describes the old man's behavior; the put-on list describes Christ's character. You are not building a better self — you are manifesting a given new nature. What in your current behavior needs to be identified as 'old man' and decisively renounced?

Prayer: Lord, I have put off the old man and put on the new. Help me to live from that truth — not as aspiration but as reality. Let the new nature You gave me show itself in thoughts, words, and actions that reflect the image of Him who created me new. Amen.
