Post #16: Rightly Dividing Old Testament Promises | KJV Right Division (Week 1)
Post 16 · Rightly Dividing Old Testament Promises
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works." — 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)
Who? Every Bible student — this verse affirms the profitability of ALL Scripture, including the Old Testament.
Dispensation: Grace Age — we read the OT through the lens of its completion and fulfillment, mining it for doctrine, not law-keeping.
Key: All Scripture is profitable — but not all Scripture is addressed to us as direct command. Profitable ≠ directly applicable.

The Old Testament is God's inspired Word and is profitable for us in four ways: doctrine (establishing theological truth), reproof (identifying error), correction (restoring right paths), and instruction in righteousness. But 'profitable' is not the same as 'directly applicable as law.' The food laws, the sacrificial system, the Sabbath commands — these were given to Israel under Law and are now fulfilled in Christ (Col 2:16-17). We read them for their typological depth, their prophetic insight, and their revelation of God's character — but we don't observe them as commands. Rightly dividing the Old Testament is knowing what it teaches vs. what it demands of us today.
Application: Read Leviticus 23 (the feasts of Israel) as a Grace-Age student. Ask: (1) What does each feast teach about Christ? (2) What does Colossians 2:16-17 say about our obligation to keep them? (3) What abiding spiritual truth can I draw from each one? Separate the shadow from the substance.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the Old Testament's richness. Help us to mine it well — seeing Christ on every page, learning doctrine from its history, and never confusing its shadows with the substance we have in Jesus. Amen.
