Post #171: Tongues as Evidence of Salvation | KJV Right Division (Week 7)
Post 171 · Day 43-3: Speaking in Tongues as Evidence?
"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal." — 1 Corinthians 13:1 (KJV)
Common Error: Teaching that speaking in tongues is the required initial evidence of Holy Spirit baptism, based on Acts 2, 10, and 19 — applied to all believers in all ages.
Right Division Correction: Tongues in Acts were real human languages (Acts 2:6-11), given as a sign to unbelieving Israel (1 Cor 14:21-22, citing Isa 28:11). Paul's own epistles indicate tongues would cease (1 Cor 13:8) and are the least of gifts (1 Cor 14:19). The Spirit's indwelling and sealing (Eph 1:13) does not require a tongues manifestation.
The Grace Age believer is sealed and indwelt by the Holy Spirit at the moment of belief (Eph 1:13) — not at some subsequent crisis experience. The "baptism of the Spirit" in Paul's epistles is the act that places us into the Body of Christ (1 Cor 12:13) — a positional truth, already accomplished. To demand tongues as evidence is to add a work to grace and divide believers who are equally sealed.
