Post #178: Tithing in the Age of Grace | KJV Right Division (Week 7)
Post 178 · Day 46-1: Tithing as New Testament Law?
"Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." — 2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV)
Common Error: Teaching that the 10% tithe is a binding New Testament obligation on Grace Age believers, citing Malachi 3:10 and Matthew 23:23 as universal commands.
Right Division Correction: The tithe was the Mosaic tax system for Israel — funding the Levitical priesthood and temple services. Christ's mention of tithing (Matt 23:23) was to Jews under the Law before the cross. Paul's Grace Age giving principle is: proportional, purposed, cheerful — not under compulsion (2 Cor 9:6-7). There is no percentage mandate in Pauline epistles.
Grace giving is actually more generous than tithing — it flows from a heart transformed by the love of Christ, not from legal obligation. Paul's example in 1 Corinthians 16:2 — "as God hath prospered him" — implies proportional and Spirit-led giving. Generosity is a fruit of the Spirit and an overflow of grace received. The tithe sets a floor; grace should motivate a ceiling far above 10%.
