Post #19: The Rapture of the Church (1 Thess 4:13-18) | KJV Right Division (Week 1)

Post 19 · The Rapture of the Church (1 Thess 4:13-18)

"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air." — 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (KJV)
Who? Thessalonian believers grieving over members who had died — Paul comforting them with the doctrine of the Rapture.
Dispensation: Grace Age — the Rapture is the Body of Christ's unique hope, distinct from Israel's Second Coming hope.
Key: "Caught up" (ἁρπάζω — harpazō) = to seize suddenly; transliterated into Latin as "rapturo" — the source of the word "rapture."

The Rapture is Paul's 'comfort' for believers concerning the dead in Christ and the living saints. It is distinct from the Second Coming of Revelation 19: at the Rapture, Christ meets us in the air; at the Second Coming, He comes to the earth. The Rapture precedes the Tribulation (1 Thess 5:9; Rev 3:10); the Second Coming ends it. This doctrine was not revealed until Paul — it is part of the mystery hidden from the prophets. The dead in Christ rise first, then living saints are transformed and caught up — all in 'the twinkling of an eye' (1 Cor 15:52). This is the Body's blessed hope.

Application: Read 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and 1 Corinthians 15:51-54 together — two passages describing the same event from different angles. List what happens: (1) to the dead in Christ, (2) to living believers, (3) where we meet the Lord, (4) what we receive. Then read Titus 2:13 — why is this called the 'blessed hope'?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we look up for You. Thank You that before the Tribulation's darkness, You are coming for Your Body. Keep us watching, working, and longing for that day. Come quickly. Amen.
