Post #195: Word of Faith – Examined by Scripture | KJV Right Division (Week 7)
Post 195 · Day 49-9: Universalism vs Eternal Punishment
"And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal." — Matthew 25:46 (KJV)
Universalist Error: Teaching that all people will ultimately be saved — that a loving God would not allow anyone to experience eternal punishment. Often called Christian Universalism or Ultimate Reconciliation.
Biblical Correction: The same word "everlasting" (aionios) applies to both punishment and life in Matthew 25:46 — if eternal life is eternal, so is eternal punishment. The lake of fire is "prepared for the devil and his angels" and all whose names are not in the Book of Life (Matt 25:41, Rev 20:15). Universal salvation cannot be reconciled with a plain reading of Scripture.
Universalism makes the cross optional and the Gospel non-urgent. If everyone is ultimately saved, why preach? Why suffer persecution for the Gospel? The whole urgency of Paul's ministry — and of Christ's substitutionary death — depends on the genuine danger of eternal separation from God. God's love is real; so is His justice. Mercy provided the cross; justice demands its acceptance.

Prayer: Lord, the cross proves both Your love and Your justice. May its urgency drive us to reach every person we can before the door of grace closes. Amen.
