Post #196: Week 7 Review – Errors Corrected by Right Division | KJV Right Division (Week 7)

Post 196 · Day 49-10: Annihilationism Examined

"And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night." — Revelation 14:11 (KJV)
Annihilationist Error: Teaching that the unsaved are ultimately destroyed — cease to exist — rather than experiencing conscious, eternal punishment. Often called "Conditional Immortality."
Biblical Correction: "The smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever" implies ongoing, conscious experience. The rich man in Hades was conscious, aware, and suffering (Luke 16:23-28). The Beast and False Prophet are still "tormented day and night for ever and ever" one thousand years after being cast into the lake of fire (Rev 20:10 — compare 19:20). Annihilation would end, not continue, their torment.

Annihilationism is appealing because it seems more consistent with a loving God — but it requires overriding clear statements of ongoing, conscious torment. The same Bible that describes eternal life as conscious, relational, and unending describes eternal punishment in the same terms. Both are real; both are eternal; both are conscious. The motivation to preach the Gospel with urgency depends on taking both truths with full seriousness.

Prayer: Lord, let the solemn reality of eternal judgment fill us with holy urgency — for our own witness, our prayers, and our willingness to bear reproach for the Gospel. Amen.
