Post #245: Not to Baptize But to Preach the Cross | KJV Right Division (Week 9)
Post 245 · Day 60-1: 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 – Not to Baptize But to Preach the Cross
“For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” — 1 Corinthians 1:17-18 KJV
Paul explicitly distinguishes his primary commission from water baptism. This does not eliminate baptism but places it clearly subordinate to the Gospel proclamation. The cross — and its simple proclamation — is the power of God. Eloquence and wisdom of words can actually hinder it by directing attention from the cross to the preacher.
Right Division: Right Division: This verse is a key marker in the transition between dispensations. In Acts 2:38, water baptism was commanded for remission of sins under the Kingdom proclamation. In Paul's epistles, he minimizes water baptism (he barely remembers who he baptized) because his commission centers on the grace Gospel. The Body of Christ is identified by Spirit baptism (1 Corinthians 12:13), not water. Right division clarifies what belongs to which program.
