Post #314: Run to Obtain the Prize | KJV Right Division (Week 12)
Post 314 · Day 77-2: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 – Run to Obtain the Prize
“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.” — 1 Corinthians 9:24 KJV
Paul uses the athletic image: a race where every runner competes but only one wins. His application: run to win. Not casual jog but disciplined, focused, directed effort. He disciplines his own body — keeps it under — so that having preached to others, he himself should not be disqualified.
Right Division: Right Division: The race imagery applies to the grace-age Judgment Seat of Christ, not to salvation. Salvation is by grace through faith — no running required to be saved. But rewards — crowns, positions in the Kingdom, the Judgment Seat evaluation — these require faithful running. Paul fears becoming 'a castaway' (adokimos) — not losing salvation but being disqualified from reward. Grace-age living has an accountability dimension: we will give account (Romans 14:12).
