Post #337: Preach the Word: Paul's Final Charge | KJV Right Division (Week 12)
Post 337 · Day 83-1: 2 Timothy 4:1-2 – Preach the Word: Paul's Final Charge
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” — 2 Timothy 4:1-2 KJV
Paul's final charge is the most solemn in all his epistles. Before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, at His appearing and Kingdom — the gravest possible witness. And the charge: preach the Word. Not inspiration, not entertainment, not therapy — the Word. Reprove, rebuke, exhort — in season and out, with longsuffering and doctrine.
Right Division: Right Division: 'With all longsuffering and doctrine' is Paul's distinctive grace-age charge. Longsuffering — patient endurance with difficult people and resistant hearers. Doctrine — specifically Paul's doctrine, the pattern of sound words (2 Timothy 1:13). The grace-age preacher endures with patience while maintaining doctrinal faithfulness. The temptation Paul warns about (verses 3-4) is precisely to abandon doctrine for popular teaching — the timeless danger of itching ears.
