Post #35: Eternal Security in the Grace Age | KJV Right Division (Week 2)

Post 35 · Propitiation – Romans 3:25

"Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God." — Romans 3:25 (KJV)
Who? All sinners who come by faith — propitiation is God's public display of the solution to the problem of His own justice.
Dispensation: Grace Age — the cross is the eternal propitiation; faith in Christ's blood appropriates it personally.
Key: Propitiation = the satisfaction of God's righteous wrath against sin through the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ.

Propitiation is the most theologically weighty word in Paul's vocabulary of salvation. It means the satisfaction or appeasement of divine wrath through an acceptable sacrifice. God's holiness requires that sin be punished — He cannot simply overlook it without compromising His justice. The cross is God's answer: Christ absorbed the full weight of divine wrath against all human sin, satisfying God's righteous demand. 'God set Christ forth' as the propitiation — God Himself provided the sacrifice. This is why salvation is entirely God's work: He is both the offended party and the One who provides the satisfaction. 'Through faith in his blood' is the human side — we appropriate this completed propitiation by faith.

Application: Read Romans 3:21-26 slowly. Notice: (1) Who provided the propitiation? (2) Through what is it accessed? (3) What does it declare about God's character (v.25-26)? God must be both 'just AND the justifier' — how does the cross make both possible simultaneously? This is the logical heart of the gospel.

Prayer: Holy God, You could not pass over sin without Your justice being satisfied. So You satisfied it Yourself — in Christ. We marvel at a God who is both perfectly just and gloriously merciful, and who found a way to be both. Thank You for the cross. Amen.
