Post #45: The Riches of His Grace (Eph 1:7-8) | KJV Right Division (Week 2)

Post 45 · The Gift of Righteousness (Rom 5:17)

"For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ." — Romans 5:17 (KJV)
Who? All who receive — the gift is universal in availability, personal in appropriation; whoever receives reigns.
Dispensation: Grace Age — righteousness as a GIFT (not an achievement) is the defining feature of this dispensation over against the Law.
Key: "Gift of righteousness" — righteousness is not earned by moral effort but received by faith; it is a gift just as sin and death were received by being in Adam.

Romans 5:12-21 is one of the most profound theological passages in Scripture, comparing Adam and Christ as two federal heads of humanity. In Adam, sin and death were inherited — we didn't earn them, we received them by being in him. In Christ, righteousness and life are received — not earned but given. The 'much more' of verse 17 signals that what we receive in Christ far exceeds what we lost in Adam. We lost by one trespass; we gain by 'abundance of grace.' We died in Adam; we reign in life through Christ. The Grace Age is the age of this abundant gift — available to all, transforming all who receive it.

Application: Read Romans 5:12-21 and count how many times Paul uses the words 'gift,' 'free gift,' and 'freely.' Then compare what we receive (righteousness, life, grace) with what Adam transmitted (sin, death, condemnation). Which side is more abundant? Why does the 'much more' of verse 17 matter for your confidence before God?

Prayer: Father, we were in Adam and received death. Now we are in Christ and receive righteousness — as a gift, without earning it. We reign in life because of Your abundant grace. Let us live as those who reign, not those who cower. Amen.
