Post 47 · Forgiveness in the Grace Age (Eph 4:32)

"And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you." — Ephesians 4:32 (KJV)
Who? Believers in the Body of Christ — our forgiveness of others is to mirror the standard and motivation of God's forgiveness of us.
Dispensation: Grace Age — forgiveness is 'for Christ's sake,' based on the cross, not earned by the offending party.
Key: "For Christ's sake" — our forgiveness of others does not depend on the other person's repentance; it is extended freely because Christ forgave us freely.

Ephesians 4:32 sets the Grace-Age standard for interpersonal forgiveness: as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you — that is the measure and the motive. God forgave us not because we earned it, not after we had sufficiently repented, not proportional to the offense — but for Christ's sake, because the sin debt was paid at the cross. This is why Grace-Age forgiveness is not contingent on the other person's response. We extend forgiveness freely because we received it freely. This does not mean trusting someone who has proven untrustworthy — it means releasing the debt, not holding the offense against them, and treating them as God treats us: with kindness and a tender heart.

Application: Is there someone you have not yet forgiven? Read Colossians 3:13 alongside Ephesians 4:32 — 'even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.' Ask three questions: (1) Did God wait for you to fully repent before forgiving? (2) Did God forgive proportional to your offense? (3) Why then are you withholding from another what was freely given to you? Write a prayer of release.

Prayer: Lord, You forgave me what I could never repay — for Christ's sake, freely, fully, forever. Give me a heart that extends to others what You have given to me. Melt every hardness, every score-keeping, every bitterness. Amen.
