Post 57 · God's Covenant with Abraham – Still Future

"Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed." — Genesis 12:1-3 (KJV)
Who? God speaking directly to Abram — an unconditional promise that forms the bedrock of all biblical prophecy concerning Israel.
Dispensation: Promise — the Abrahamic Covenant was given before the Law and cannot be nullified by it (Gal 3:17).
Key: Three elements: land (Canaan), seed (a great nation), and blessing (to all families of the earth). All three await complete literal fulfillment.

The Abrahamic Covenant is the foundational promise of all biblical prophecy. God promised Abraham: (1) a specific land — Canaan, with defined borders (Gen 15:18-21), (2) a great nation through his seed — Israel, (3) universal blessing — ultimately through Messiah (Gal 3:16). This covenant is unconditional: God alone passed between the pieces (Gen 15:17-18), while Abraham slept. Abraham could not break it. The physical land promises have never been fully fulfilled — Israel has never possessed all the territory God defined (Gen 15:18-21). The complete fulfillment awaits the Millennial Kingdom, when Israel will dwell securely in the full land under Messiah's reign (Amos 9:14-15; Ezek 37:25). This covenant is still alive and still future.

Application: Read Genesis 15:1-21 — the formal covenant-making ceremony. Notice: God put Abraham to sleep (v.12), then God alone walked between the pieces (v.17). Why is this significant? An unconditional covenant has only ONE party who must perform. What does this tell you about God's faithfulness to Israel's future? How does it strengthen your confidence in all of God's promises?

Prayer: Faithful God, You swore to Abraham what You will certainly fulfill. The land, the nation, the blessing — all are coming. Help us to hold Your promises with Abraham's faith, calling things that are not as though they were. Amen.
