Post #59: The Davidic Covenant and the Kingdom | KJV Right Division (Week 3)
Post 59 · The Davidic Covenant and the Kingdom
"And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. I will be his father, and he shall be my son... And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever." — 2 Samuel 7:12-13,14,16 (KJV)
Dispensation: Kingdom (future) — the Davidic Covenant awaits complete fulfillment when Christ sits on David's throne in Jerusalem during the Millennium.
Key: The Davidic Covenant: a physical throne, in Jerusalem, for a physical descendant of David (Jesus), ruling a literal kingdom forever.
The Davidic Covenant is one of the great unconditional promises of Scripture. God promises David: his seed will build the Temple (Solomon — partial fulfillment), his kingdom will be established forever, and his throne will be eternal. The ultimate fulfillment is Jesus Christ — the 'son of David' (Matt 1:1), whose throne was promised before His birth (Luke 1:32-33 — 'the LORD God shall give unto him the throne of his father David'). This throne is not a spiritual metaphor for God's universal sovereignty — it is a specific, literal, Davidic throne in Jerusalem. Jesus has not yet sat on it; He is currently at the right hand of the Father (Ps 110:1). At His return, He will sit on this throne and reign for 1,000 years (Rev 20:4-6), fulfilling David's covenant completely.
