Post #90: Ephesians – The Mystery Revealed (ch.3) | KJV Right Division (Week 4)
Post 90 · Philippians – Joy in Christ Alone
"Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice." — Philippians 4:4 (KJV)
Dispensation: Grace Age — Philippians demonstrates that Grace-Age joy is not circumstantial but is grounded in the permanent reality of being 'in the Lord.'
Key: Philippians themes: joy in suffering (1), the mind of Christ and humility (2), warning against legalism (3), peace beyond understanding (4).
Philippians is the most joyful letter in the New Testament — written from prison (Phil 1:7,13,17) by a man who has been beaten, imprisoned, and abandoned by many. Joy appears 16 times in 4 chapters. The source of this joy is consistently 'in the Lord' — not in circumstances, not in comfort, not in freedom. Chapter 2 gives the theological basis: the mind of Christ, who emptied Himself and humbled Himself to the point of death (vv.5-8), then was exalted to the highest place (vv.9-11). The believer's joy is resurrection joy — anticipating the same exaltation Christ received. Chapter 3 is Paul's autobiographical demolition of religious pride: he counts everything as dung compared to 'the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord' (v.8). Philippians is what contentment looks like in a Grace-Age life.
