Post #91: Philippians – Joy in the Lord Always | KJV Right Division (Week 4)

Post 91 · Colossians – The Supremacy of Christ

"And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence." — Colossians 1:18 (KJV)
Who? The Colossian church being infiltrated by a 'philosophy' mixing Jewish ceremonialism, Greek mysticism, and angel worship — Paul responds with the supremacy of Christ.
Dispensation: Grace Age — Colossians establishes Christ's absolute supremacy over every spiritual system, philosophy, and principality.
Key: Colossians themes: the cosmic Christ (1:15-20), fullness in Christ (2:9-10), dead to the world in Christ (2:20-3:4), risen with Christ (3:1-4), putting on the new man (3:9-17).

Colossae was a small city but its church faced a 'philosophy' (2:8) that threatened the sufficiency of Christ — adding angel worship, Jewish calendar observance, and ascetic practices to faith in Christ. Paul's response is the highest Christology in the entire New Testament: Christ is the image of the invisible God (1:15), creator of all things (1:16), pre-existent (1:17 — 'before all things'), Head of the Body (1:18), firstborn from the dead (1:18), and the fullness of God dwelling bodily (1:19; 2:9). The implication of all this supremacy is stunning: 'ye are COMPLETE in him' (2:10). You need nothing added to Christ — no philosophy, no ceremony, no mystical experience. He is sufficient, total, supreme.

Application: Read Colossians 2:8-10. Notice: 'Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit' (v.8) — then 'ye are complete in him' (v.10). Every spiritual add-on that Christendom offers is implicitly a denial of this completeness. What 'additions' to Christ are you tempted by — extra experiences, rules, rituals, or authorities? Hold each one against Colossians 2:10. If you are complete in Him, what does the addition actually contribute?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the image of the invisible God, the creator, the Head, the firstborn, the fullness. And in You we are complete. Nothing to add, nothing lacking. Let this settle every restless search for something more. You are our more. Amen.
