Post #96: 2 Timothy – Last Days Instruction | KJV Right Division (Week 4)
Post 96 · Titus – Grace and Good Works
"Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works." — Titus 2:14 (KJV)
Dispensation: Grace Age — Titus shows that grace transforms the most unlikely people and produces the most unexpected virtues.
Key: Titus themes: elder qualifications (1), sound doctrine for all ages (2), grace that teaches godliness (2:11-14), submission to authorities (3), justified by grace not works (3:5-7).
Titus is written to address the 'Cretan problem' — a church in a culture known for its lying and laziness (1:12) that needed structure, sound doctrine, and visible transformation. Paul's answer is not stricter rules but deeper grace. Chapter 2 is a masterpiece: sound doctrine is prescribed for older men (2:2), older women (2:3-4), younger women (2:4-5), young men (2:6-8), and slaves (2:9-10) — all different, but all grounded in the same source: grace that teaches godliness (2:11-12). Chapter 3:5-7 gives one of Paul's clearest salvation summaries: 'Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost... that being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.'
