Post #98: Philemon – Grace in Relationships | KJV Right Division (Week 4)
Post 98 · The Prison Epistles – Heavenly Focus (Phil 3:20)
"For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ." — Philippians 3:20 (KJV)
Dispensation: Grace Age — the Prison Epistles (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon) were all written from Roman imprisonment and share the theme of heavenly focus.
Key: "Conversation" (πολίτευμα) = citizenship or commonwealth; our primary civic identity is heavenly, not earthly. We are citizens of heaven residing temporarily on earth.
The four Prison Epistles (Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon) share a remarkable characteristic: they were all written from prison, yet they overflow with themes of heavenly exaltation. Ephesians places us 'in heavenly places in Christ Jesus' (2:6). Philippians declares 'our citizenship is in heaven' (3:20). Colossians says we are 'risen with Christ' and should 'seek those things which are above' (3:1). Philemon demonstrates the practical social implications of spiritual equality in Christ. Paul writes from chains about thrones — from earth about heaven. The contrast is the teaching: our circumstances do not define our identity. Our address is temporary; our citizenship is permanent. We are heavenly colonists in an earthly world.
