Titus 2:11-13 – The Grace of God That Bringeth Salvation | KJV Bible Study

Week 4 · Day 28-4 · 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.”

— Titus 2:11-13 KJV

Titus 2:11-13 is perhaps the most compact and complete summary of the grace age in all of Scripture — three verses that cover the entirety of grace-age existence from its historical inauguration to its glorious consummation.

'The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men' — this is the historical announcement. The grace of God appeared in the person of Jesus Christ, who is Himself the embodiment of grace (John 1:14 — 'full of grace and truth'). The cross is the supreme appearance of grace — God's unmerited favor toward guilty sinners expressed in the sacrifice of His own Son. And it appeared not to Israel only but to ALL men — the grace age is the age of universal gospel proclamation, in which the Grace Gospel of 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 goes out to every person without ethnic, national, or covenant restriction.

Verse 12 describes the present-tense work of grace in the believer's life: grace is not only the basis of salvation but the teacher of sanctification. 'Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.' Grace teaches. Not fear of punishment, not external law codes, not religious performance requirements — but grace itself, properly understood and believed, produces holy living. The person who truly grasps what grace has done for him will live differently, not as an obligation but as the natural outflow of gratitude and love.

✂ Right Division

Verse 13 introduces the future dimension: 'Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.' The 'blessed hope' is the Church's specific, grace-age anticipation — the Rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17), the sudden, imminent catching away of the Body of Christ to meet the Lord in the air. This 'looking' is not passive; it is the active, eager, expectant orientation of every grace-age believer toward the certain return of Christ. The expectation of His coming purifies the present-tense life: 'every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure' (1 John 3:3).

The three tenses of Titus 2:11-13 constitute the complete grace-age framework: PAST — grace appeared (the cross, the historical foundation of salvation); PRESENT — grace teaches (the ongoing sanctifying work of grace in the believer's daily life); FUTURE — looking for the blessed hope (the certain, imminent return of Christ as the horizon of all grace-age living). Every day of the grace-age believer's life is lived between the appearing of grace at Calvary and the glorious appearing at the Rapture — between the past grace and the future glory.

✦ Application for Today

Let the blessed hope recalibrate your day. Christ could come today. Not as a frightening thought but as a purifying one — what would you want to be doing when He arrives? What relationship would you want to have reconciled? What word would you want to have spoken? Live today as if the glorious appearing is imminent — because it is.

Grace appeared. Grace teaches. Grace is coming again in glory. The same grace that saved you is sanctifying you and will ultimately glorify you. To God be the glory — great things He hath done. Study to shew thyself approved, rightly dividing the word of truth. The grace age is the greatest time in history to be a believer. Live it fully. Amen.
