Tongues – A Sign for Unbelieving Israel | 1 Corinthians 14:22 KJV

Week 3 · Day 17-3 · 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

“Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not.”

— 1 Corinthians 14:22 KJV

Tongues were a covenant sign for Israel — Paul cites Isaiah 28:11 as the precedent. At Pentecost, Jewish diaspora heard the Gospel in their own languages — a miraculous sign that God was moving among His people. Tongues told Israel: the Kingdom offer is going out.

✂ Right Division

Paul's correction of the Corinthian tongue-speakers is extensive — 1 Corinthians 14. I had rather speak five words with my understanding than ten thousand in an unknown tongue. The gift, properly used, required interpretation. Chaotic ecstatic use was not endorsed.

✦ Application

Your access to God does not require a gift of tongues. The Spirit intercedes for you — Romans 8:26-27. You have direct access to the Father in the name of Christ. That is sufficient, glorious, and eternally secure.
