Why Was the Law Given? – Galatians 3:19 KJV Explained
“Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made.”
— Galatians 3:19 KJVTwo words unlock this verse: added and till. The Law was not the eternal plan — it was added, temporary, purposeful. It served until the seed — Christ — should come. When Christ came, the Law's role as a path to righteousness ended.
Three purposes of the Law: (1) Expose transgression — Romans 3:20. (2) Serve as a schoolmaster bringing us to Christ — Galatians 3:24. (3) Demonstrate that no flesh can be justified by works. All three purposes are fulfilled in Christ.
The Law was never meant to save you — it was meant to show you that you needed a Saviour. Christ is that Saviour. You have arrived at the destination the Law was pointing toward. Stay there.
